A spiced apple smoothie in a glass.

Applesauce is the trick: all the apple flavor, already smooth, and a quarter cup keeps the carbs in check where a whole apple would not.

With cinnamon and nutmeg it drinks like the filling of an apple pie, minus the crust and the regret.

This is number 12 of our top 20 high protein, low carb smoothies.

method

  1. Pour the almond milk into the blender, add the applesauce, protein powder and spices.

  2. Add the ice. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds, until completely smooth.

  3. Taste and adjust: a few more ice cubes for thicker, a splash more liquid for thinner. Drink cold.

chef's tips

  • The label matters: unsweetened applesauce is around 6 net carbs a quarter cup, the sweetened kind is double.
  • A teaspoon of almond butter makes it taste like apple pie with ice cream, for 2 extra grams of fat.
  • Use a protein powder with no added sugar. It is the difference between 3 and 15 grams of carbs per scoop.
