A pumpkin spice protein shake in a glass.

Pumpkin is quietly a great smoothie ingredient: low in carbs, high in fiber, and it makes everything creamy.

A quarter cup of the real puree plus pumpkin spice gets you the latte flavor with none of the syrup.

This is number 9 of our top 20 high protein, low carb smoothies.

method

  1. Pour the almond milk into the blender, add the pumpkin, protein powder and spice.

  2. Add the ice. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds, until completely smooth.

  3. Taste and adjust: a few more ice cubes for thicker, a splash more liquid for thinner. Drink cold.

chef's tips

  • Buy plain pumpkin puree, not pie filling. The filling is half sugar.
  • Freeze the rest of the can in quarter-cup portions; one can is eight smoothies.
  • Use a protein powder with no added sugar. It is the difference between 3 and 15 grams of carbs per scoop.
