A chocolate espresso protein shake in a glass.

The difference between this and the mocha is intensity. Two real shots of espresso, not brewed coffee, so the coffee flavor leads and the chocolate follows.

Best cold and fast after training, when you want protein and caffeine in the same two minutes.

This is number 15 of our top 20 high protein, low carb smoothies.

method

  1. Pull the espresso and chill it; a few minutes in the freezer while you clean up works.

  2. Pour the espresso and almond milk into the blender, add the protein powder and ice.

  3. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds, until completely smooth. Taste and adjust: a few more ice cubes for thicker, a splash more liquid for thinner. Drink cold.

chef's tips

  • Hot espresso melts the ice and thins the shake; chill it first, always.
  • No espresso machine? A quarter cup of very strong moka pot or instant espresso does the job.
  • Use a protein powder with no added sugar. It is the difference between 3 and 15 grams of carbs per scoop.
