A berry smoothie in a glass.

Berries are the fruit that low-carb eating keeps. Half a cup of mixed berries brings the antioxidants and the color without wrecking the carb count.

Frozen berries beat fresh here: colder, cheaper, and they thicken the smoothie on their own.

This is number 3 of our top 20 high protein, low carb smoothies.

method

  1. Pour the almond milk into the blender, add the berries and protein powder.

  2. Blend on high for 30 to 45 seconds, until completely smooth.

  3. Taste and adjust: a few more ice cubes for thicker, a splash more liquid for thinner. Drink cold.

chef's tips

  • Frozen berries make it thick like soft-serve; fresh berries make it drinkable. Pick your texture.
  • Raspberries are the lowest-carb berry, so lean the mix toward them if you are counting closely.
  • Use a protein powder with no added sugar. It is the difference between 3 and 15 grams of carbs per scoop.
